Arkansas and Asia in Business

Arkansas has a long and successful history working with Asia in the areas of trade relations, foreign direct investments, as well as professionals and entrepreneurs finding their own wins in foreign lands. Here are some facts:

  • The world's biggest retailer, Walmart Inc., headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, currently has about 800 stores in Asia, distributed in China, Japan and India.
  • According to American Community Survey data, the total Asian population in Arkansas in 2018 is 41,179, with the biggest growth in Northwest Arkansas since 2010.
  • The highly regarded and first female executive director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (from 2007 to 2011), Maria Haley, was born in the Philippines and educated in India, Pakistan, France and Spain.
